Romanian Folk Dances

Astor Piazzolla
Milonga del Angel
No stuffiness here as some of Australia's finest musicians bring down the house with music of joy and good fun from across the globe. The SXS Curatorial Team (Ashley Smith, Margaret Blades and Tim Munro) are joined by Festival Pianist, Liam Viney for the first piece of the program, which was written by Bartok in his travels to the wilds of Transylvania (yep, that one). Whilst there, he recorded these folk dances, filled with the spirit of the dance.
Astor Piazzola was Argentina's most celebrated son, a virtuoso band-leader and inventor of a new tango movement - his music fills the hall with heart and passion. Heitor Villa-Lobos combined the refinement of classical music with the verve of music from deep in the Brazilian Amazon.
The nationally-beloved duo Slava and Sharon Grigoryan provide a little musical surprise. There will be plenty of chances to meet and mingle with the artists before and after this performance.
